Aan een boom in het Vondelpark

Er is een boom geveld met lange groene lokken.
Hij zuchtte ruisend als een kind
terwijl hij viel, nog vol van zomerwind.
Ik heb de kar gezien, die hem heeft weggetrokken.

O, als een jonge man, als Hector aan de zegewagen,
met slepend haar en met de geur van jeugd
stromende uit zijn schone wonden,
het jonge hoofd nog ongeschonden,
De trotse romp nog onverslagen.

For a tree in the Vondel Park

A tree was cut down with long locks of green.
It sighed with a swish like a child
as it fell, still full of summer wind.
I have seen the wagon that carried it away.

O, as a young man, as Hector in his chariot
with trailing hair and the smell of youth
streaming out of his beautiful wounds,
the young head still unscathed,
The proud buttocks still undefeated.

Het Lict is Rond

Het licht is rond en rolt naar alle kanten
de bergen op en af, de dalen door,
de wezens in en uit en langs de planten
stijgt het de boomen in en gaat het alles voor.
Waarheen? Ik vraag dat niet, ik kom, ik ga,
omdat mijn handen en mijn voeten,
mijn ogen en mijn hart zoo moeten
en ik het licht nu eenmaal zoo versta.

The light is round and rolls on all its sides,
down the mountains, through the dales,
the beings in and out and past the plants,
it climbs up in the trees and goes in front of all.

Ik ben een vonk die doelloos, richtingloos,
Geworpen in 't heelal mijn vaart begon,

wat was in slot, ontnomen

De deur die binnen was,
is buitendeur geworden.
Onder de hand der horde

De spiegel met eeuwig licht

Waar divan en donker stonden

Under the hands of hordes

The bent over mirror with
etenal light remains silent,
and closes the room.
It is covered with cobwebs.

Where couch and darkness stood
is now, mocking their secret,
a wonan's shoe to be found;
but love is made of God.
And outside the dogs are waiting.
