Who is tending the herd? . . .
Cows, like most animals on the prairie, like to congregate around
pools, springs amd riparian areas. Here, besides cooling off and
drinking just as we humans do, the livestock deposits its feces and
browses, for example, the young cottonwood trees, preventing
their rejuvenation. With, in my view, far too many animals in the
nationwide herd—estimated at 100,000,000 animals—livestock
has become the number one source of non-point water pollution
in the US.
